Today, I’m sharing the principles of the rustic luxury style that is taking 2022 by storm!
What is rustic luxury?
Rustic luxury is not a new thing! It’s the idea of taking a luxurious lifestyle but incorporating it into a rustic setting. It doesn’t always have to take place in the country though! These concepts work in any location! One of the reasons why I think so many people love this style and the ethos behind it is because it’s pared-back and there isn’t layer upon layer upon layer of furnishings.
Tip #1- Add sophistication
I think this is the biggest reason this style is a departure from farmhouse! We have access to some of the chicest magazines and books that showcase designs from all around the world. We’re able to see things we haven’t seen before!
The modern farmhouse trend was all about everyday items that were seemingly taken from the barn. Rustic luxury is about using more sophisticated materials like marble and putting them together in a way that feels elevated and modern. We can create a sophisticated look in any room!
Tip #2- Use this style with traditional and/or modern aesthetic
This style can definitely go either way! If you love to combine styles like me, this style will really speak to you! Rustic luxury is all about a way of living and a way of putting together your home. Whether you like a more traditional sofa or a more modern sofa, this style will work for you!
Tip #3- Mix luxurious materials with raw & natural materials
Rustic luxury is all about luxurious materials! In my own family room, I have velvet, faux cashmere, and marble. You take those elevated materials and pair them with something that’s comfortable and natural like boucle or concrete. It’s that pairing of things that seem like they would be in opposition that makes them work so perfectly together!
Tip #4- Use a muted & natural color palette
You’ll also want to make sure to use a muted color palette! That doesn’t mean you can’t use black though! I certainly still use and love black, but I limit how much I use it. I don’t want it to be too dark! Think about how nature appears on a cloudy day, that’s the color palette that sums up this style.
Tip #5- Mix high style with practical approachability
I alluded to this before, but this is why this style speaks to so many of us! We love to have something that feels chic and elegant but also feels cozy and comfortable. It’s the best of both worlds!
Tip #6- Bring in warmth
If you’re terrified of leaving the farmhouse trend behind because you’re scared you’ll sacrifice that cozy feeling, I’m here to say that you’re still going to have that homey feeling by adding that warmth back in! And it’s still practical! You can add warmth to your space by bringing in candles, showcasing a cozy fireplace, and even simply adding some throw blankets.
