How do we begin to describe Tulum, Mexico? Exotic, warm, relaxing, sensual and exciting are just a few words that come to mind. We recently took the family to Tulum for the week and we had an epic time. We heard one guest who regularly comes to Cancun say “Cancun is about the party, Tulum is about the experience.” The week wasn’t all about the places to go, or the things to do as much as it was about a way of living. Tulum has an elevated adventure feel to it with a strong focus on sustainability and good, fresh food. The beaches are front and center here with almost everything built along the beach road. Here are a few of our favorite places.
Papaya Playa Project
From the moment you arrive you are transported to a different place, a world of its own. This is a resort that bends the rules and everyone is better for it. The architects designed each room based on the location and setting, so no two rooms/casitas/villas are alike. The pathways meander through the jungle and you’re likely to engage some type of wild life on your journey around the property. Before you think it’s too rustic, the restaurant bends the rules again. The food is fresh, healthy and served in an amazing ocean front setting. Throw in a cozy coffee shop, a spa and amazing customer service and you have a true experience.
Hecho a Mano
We were on the hunt for some locally made goods and we found this amazing gem! Everything they sell is made in Tulum and the sweet couple that owns the shop makes most of the items themselves. While we were there we watched the husband literally making a chair, amazing! It’s located a few minutes away from the beach but worth every minute of it!
Hartwood
This restaurant came highly recommended and know we know why. The menu changes daily based on what is sourced from both the sea and land. Every ingredient is sourced locally and prepared over a hand made wood burning oven. The restaurant is 100% sustainable and considered to be off-grid in the best way possible. Make sure to book a reservation as soon as you can, they go fast!
La Valise
This amazing home store is located on the property of the resort “La Valise” but accessible from the beach road. I had so much fun shopping in this store and brought home some amazing table linens, place mats and a few other treasures. You’ll definitely want to bring an extra suitcase (like we did) to fill up at La Valise.
La Tiendita
This store is literally full of treasures. The space is made up of several small stores that all share a similar aesthetic and vibe. Their linen apparel was breath taking, Jack was ready to buy every single item. We also loved their pottery and we picked up a few locally made candles as well. Be sure to check out their Instagram account, it is truly inspiring!
