Musings on the allure of nighttime

May 30, 2025 · In: Interior Design

And here we are again.  The eve of another weekend is upon us and all I can think about is the allure of nighttime.  I’ve always been a night owl and  I was trying to figure out why on earth I love the after hours of each day the most.  Seriously, I stay up every night until it’s almost morning.  Don’t get me wrong.  Mornings are nice too!  They come with birds and morning dew and blooms revealing themselves… but oh.  Nighttime.  Now that is something I really just cannot get enough of.

When I was a kid my bedtime was 7:30 sharp, even in the summer.  I remember being so mad at my mom for making me go to bed before the darkness had set in.  I’d pretend to go to sleep and then sneak out of my bed and sit on my window seat and watch the sun set outside my window…  It felt defiant.

I’m not sure if my parents ever figured out just how late I stayed up as a kid, but thankfully by high school they didn’t even make an attempt to put a limit on me.  It felt like real freedom.  Even when I was in school I’d barely sleep because somehow nighttime was my guilty pleasure.

And so I asked myself again.  What is it about nighttime that is so seductive?

It’s the forbidden nature of it… something made for adults only… it’s the mystery and the way the light twinkles and the shadows dance.  It feels like another world is unlocked and its glimmer is intoxicating.  The candlelight illuminates the face while the darkness plays games with the silhouette of everything else.  It’s cozy.  It’s cocooning. It’s mysterious and the eyes sparkle.  It’s intimate and calmer.  It feels private.  Intimate, even.  The noise of the world quiets and there’s a hush in the voice.  It enchants the senses and soothes the soul…

A lot of designers create spaces for daytime, with evenings as an after thought.  But I like to flip it.  I live for dimmed lights and soft shadows.

So as the weekend approaches I wonder about each of you.  Do you love the after hours as well?

However you choose to spend your weekend, I hope it is full of calm and perhaps a bit of allure… A big hug for you and a kiss for each cheek! xxV
