Home Decor Rules Designers Never Break (And You Shouldn’t Either)

March 21, 2024 · In: Interior Design

As a designer, breaking rules can sometimes lead to the most creative and unique designs. But there are certain decor rules that I, and many other designers, never break. These rules are the foundation of a well-designed space, regardless of your style preferences. Today, I’m going to share with you some of these rules and why they are so important in creating a beautiful and functional home.

Rule #1: Hang Your Curtains High

One rule that all designers seem to agree on is the importance of hanging your curtains as close to the ceiling as possible. This simple trick can make your ceilings appear higher and your room feel more spacious. Whether you prefer patterned silk or simple linen, the key is to hang them high for a more refined and finished look.

Rule #2: Choose the Right Size Rug

Choosing the right size rug for your space is crucial. A rug that is too small can make your room feel disjointed and unbalanced. In the living room, aim to have all the front legs of your furniture on the rug, or at least the front legs of the sofa and any chairs. In the dining room, make sure all the chairs can be pulled out and still remain on the rug. In the bedroom, the rug should extend beyond the bed and any benches or chairs at the end of the bed.

Rule #3: Define the Function of Each Room

Every room in your home should have a defined function. Whether it’s a living room for entertaining, a dining room for family meals, or a bedroom for rest and relaxation, each room should serve a purpose. Avoid mixing functions, like putting a gym in the kitchen or a toilet next to the dining table. By defining the function of each room, you can create a space that is both practical and comfortable.

Rule #4: Choose a Color Scheme

Having a cohesive color scheme is essential for creating a harmonious and well-designed space. Whether you prefer bold and bright colors or soft and subtle hues, having a color scheme will tie the room together and give it a polished look. Use accents of your chosen colors throughout the room to create a sense of cohesion and balance.

Rule #5: Invest in Art

Art has the power to transform a space and add personality and character. Whether you prefer abstracts, landscapes, or impressionism, investing in art that speaks to you will elevate your space and give it a unique touch. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and mediums to create a gallery wall that is truly your own.

Rule #6: Install Dimmer Switches

Dimmer switches are a must-have in any well-designed space. They allow you to control the ambiance and mood of a room by adjusting the lighting levels. Whether you prefer bright and lively or soft and romantic, dimmer switches give you the flexibility to create the perfect lighting for any occasion.

These are the decor rules I live by, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you agree? Disagree? Let’s chat in the comments below.
