Something that makes me different than a lot of designers is that I want to understand what makes my clients tick, what habits they have, their hobbies, and what interests them. Knowing these things about myself has influenced how I design my own home and I think it should influence how you design yours too!
For me, I love playing with makeup and fashion. It’s a big part of who I am and my home reflects that! I like to wear leather, silk, spiky bracelets, and incorporate fun textures like boucle, and you’ll quickly see that my home is decorated very similarly!
We have to think about who we are and all the different aspects of our personality, our needs and our wants for our space. This is where I always start with my clients– how they use their space, how they want to use their space. When you approach your design with the idea that life is happening in this space and it’s bigger than the wall color, it’s meaningful!
The thing I hope you takeaway is that there should be balance in our homes and our lives. I think knowing that will change your life and your home! You are allowed to be all things. You can be hooping and hollering, jumping up and down one moment and sitting quietly with a book the next. I have realized that every time I put a home together I am balancing the forces and that will completely change your home!
There are so many practical ways to achieve balance in your home. You can balance dark and light by using color and even lighting. You can play with textures and put leather against fur. You can show both power and restraint by being both fierce and gentle in your design.
I want to encourage you to take some time and write down how you would describe yourself. What aspects of your personality, your routine, or your lifestyle are key to who you are? This will help you figure out how to design your home. A lot of times we try to start designing our homes by picking a decor style (modern farmhouse, traditional, etc.), but I think you need to start with you! Our homes should represent all sides of who we are!
What aspect of your personality or routine do you want to incorporate into the way you design your home? Let me know in the comments!
