Six Ways to turn A boring Backyard into a Winter Oasis

January 16, 2024 · In: Garden, Interior Design

Are you one of those people who feel a bit blue when the twinkle lights, wreathes, and greenery of the Christmas season come down? You’re not alone! The transition from the magical outdoors during the holidays to the plain everyday look afterward can leave you missing that enchanting feeling. I struggle with the same thing so here are a few tips on how to transform your outdoor space into a year-round oasis, keeping the magic alive even when the holidays are over.

1. Treat Your Outdoor Space Like Another Room

First things first, think of your outdoor space as an extension of your home. It might be too cold to fully enjoy during the winter months, but that doesn’t mean it should be forgotten. Just like any other room in your house, your outdoor space deserves some love and attention. By adopting this mindset, you can make the most out of it throughout the year.

2. Invest in Weather-Friendly Furniture

To make your outdoor space truly year-round, invest in weather-resistant furniture. Consider keeping your outdoor furniture out there, even during the colder months. Of course, it’s a good idea to remove cushions and pillows when the weather is wet to prevent damage, but having the main furniture pieces in place keeps the space looking inviting and ready for use.

3. Incorporate Evergreen Plants

Nothing says “alive” like greenery, and that doesn’t have to disappear with the Christmas decorations. Plant evergreen varieties like boxwoods, hollies, or cedars in your outdoor space. These hardy plants not only provide a touch of green throughout the year but also give your space a vibrant and inviting feel, even during the winter.

4. Add Warmth with Tabletop Firepits

When the temperature drops, there’s nothing better than gathering around a cozy fire. That’s where tabletop firepits come into play. These compact fire features can be placed on your outdoor dining or coffee table, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. It’s the perfect way to enjoy your outdoor space even on chilly evenings.

5. Lighting Matters

Don’t underestimate the power of outdoor lighting. Installing some well-placed outdoor lights, such as fairy lights or lanterns, can instantly transform your outdoor space into a magical oasis. Lighting creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making your space feel warm and welcoming year-round.

6. Personalize Your Space

Lastly, don’t forget to personalize your outdoor space with items that speak to your style and personality. Incorporate outdoor rugs, decorative pillows, and cozy throws to make your space feel like an extension of your home. Adding your personal touch will make you more inclined to use and enjoy your outdoor oasis throughout the year.
