OBSESSED!!!! For the last year I’ve been obsessed with this aesthetic called modern cottage. It literally has everything that I think of when it comes to home. It’s cozy, warm, relaxing but it’s also updated and fresh. It’s the kind of home that you want to come to and stay a while.
So what makes a room feel modern cottage? Guys, it’s all in the balance… a little old, a little new, and a whole lot of warmth!
Start with the bones. Dark wood bookshelves wrapped around the room say, “pull up a chair, you’re going to be here a while.” They feel like the library in an old country house, but fill them with woven baskets, stacks of books and chunky pottery and suddenly they feel fresh and so lived in.
Then the seating. A soft cream sofa that begs you to curl up with a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning. And across from it? Two worn leather chairs, each with a faux fur throw draped over the arm, just waiting for someone to sink in with a good book.
Now come the little details, which are really the secret sauce! Buffalo check and leather pillows that feel like your favorite flannel shirt. White pottery with the sweetest little beaded detail (eeek, I love these!). Berry branches that quietly whisper the season is changing. And an olive tree in a big woven basket that brings the outside in and keeps the whole room feeling alive.
Don’t forget the lighting! Little sconces tucked right onto the shelves give the most beautiful warm glow once the sun goes down. It’s magic. Pure magic.
And finally, the soul of the room. A blue and white bowl, a few vintage books, the magazines you actually read. Those little things that make it feel like yours.
That’s the beauty of modern cottage. It isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating a home your family never wants to leave. I hope this inspires you to bring a little bit of it into yours! You can click the pics if you see anything you want to know more about! xxV
