There are a great many cafes in Salzburg, Austria where you can go, drink a cup of coffee, and just be a person, but if you want to be a character in a cafe that feels larger than life, then you need to head directly to Cafe Tomaselli. Established in 1703, this cafe is not only oozing with old world charm, but is an icon and an institution. Many of it’s patrons, each acting out his or her character, have an established routine, find their newspaper in auto mode and create a combined feeling that this is this place where you go where everybody knows your name… or where you go to hide if you don’t want to be known at all.
The pastry selection appears on a trey by a waitress who may be a bit stuffy at first but a smile from the kids changes her demeanor immediately. The male waiters in their bow ties are a little quicker to smile and bring charm of the dying breed to every task.
Without a doubt, Tomaselli gets my top pick for the best cafe in Salzburg and even now I find myself longing for our little booth by the window and for the delicious feeling of being an extra participating in a living set.
Do you love the old world charm of Tomaselli? What spot do you think would be your favorite place to become a regular?
