Love It or Leave It? … The Cherub Ceiling

September 29, 2016 · In: Interior design

Cherub Ceiling | House of Valentina
If you’ve ever spent much time house hunting or visiting with friends and neighbors, you have probably noticed that many people have extraordinarily polarizing tastes.  As a creative, I would personally rather see something creative most the time than something boring, but sometimes people take it too far… and it’s just got to go… especially if they want to sell their house.  The trouble is that sometimes a homeowner loves something so much that they just cannot imagine for a second that anyone else would feel any differently.

This master suite is beautiful with the hardwood floors, high ceilings, and copious amounts of light.  And I definitely love the antique French chandelier, but the Cherub mural above where the bed will likely go?  That I’m not sure what to think of.

In one sense, it really does remind me of the Louvre, which is exactly what the owner, who happens to be French, was likely thinking of when she had it painted.  But I’ve also heard quite a few people say that they find it appalling and would immediately paint over it.

Since we are actually considering purchasing this home I would really love to hear your opinion!

What would you do?  Love it or Leave it?

Hi there! What a beautiful place: I love the light and space. I would leave the mural, but definitely change its surroundings: the brown (or black) frame makes it heavy even though it seems to underline the depth of the ceiling. Angels should be light beings, fluttering around freely, not confined… So I would keep it light as it were. Think of it, it would also depend on the general decor of the house (furniture etc.)… Not so easy to answer your question in the end, but I’ve shared here my gut feeling! Hope it helps and I surely hope if this is your dream place that it will be all yours. All best!

Love it! Being from a family of artists and musicians, I too have a deep appreciation for creativity and personally think this looks great. Maybe not for everyone, but if I were living there it would certainly stay =)

As a creative, that was my perspective, too. It’s hard to paint over something someone has created!

I would live with it for a while. It could be very interesting to lay in bed and stare up at it. Nice room.

I love it, but it depends on your furnishings. You could paint just the mural but leave the pretty mouldings.

Not crazy about the dark molding, but love the mural:-) Whenever I have moved-4 times in 10 years at one point!) I usually always live in a space for at least 6 months to see what needs to stay, what needs to go,What I love and what I hate & definitely has to go. Getting my family settled in school, with new surroundings, new job etc. has always been my first priority in a relocation. That being said if I were to update the space,I probably would paint out the dark moldings, maybe add a new modern chandelier(maybe move the current chandelier somewhere else, dining room, entry, or MY walk in closet if I have one! Good Luck. Hope you get the space. XXOX
