Is The Climbing House Garden A No-Go?

October 21, 2016 · In: Garden

Climbing House Garden
I was talking with a home inspector yesterday about a property and he said that the ivy growing up the side of the home needed to go… ASAP.  I protested.

But a Climbing House Garden is so European!

It’s one of my favorite things about Europe, I practically squeaked.  (I’m learning quickly that my voice goes up three octaves when really important things like foundation cracks, leaking roof, and Climbing House gardens are at stake.)  Of course the next thing he had to mention were bugs, rot, and rodents.  That’s so unfair!

Who wants a climbing rose or a wall of ivy on their house when you bring up pests and extra expenses?

So, is it really worth the risk?  That’s what I was left wondering.  Probably not, but today’s roundup of homes are not helping the practical side of the argument.  Surely all the people living in these homes don’t have bugs crawling all over them?

Still, it’s definitely something worth considering.  I even wondered if a detached trellis that isn’t attached to the house might be a great solution.  An arbor is another contender.  My mom has both and she has a mix of jasmine, roses, and morning glories growing on hers.

Multiple plants that bloom at different times of year will keep a trellis or arbor colorful all year long.

What do you think?  Would you risk putting in a Climbing House Garden on your home?  Have you?

Such beautiful house gardens. I love the look. There was a small town in Ireland that was filled with such beautiful homes. I have heard that ivy on brick can be dangerous. Your idea of a detached trellis might be a good solution.

We had it growing on our brick in Denmark and that house had withstood everything since 1850… but the weather is so cold. Maybe the heat of the south makes it worse??

We have a massive jasmine growing over the side of our garage in the country which I love but I get what he is saying – we have been told the same by a pest inspector about having plants growing up the house! These pics are all so pretty though – swoon.. A house I visited recently got around it by erecting trellis about half a metre away from the front of the house – with holes cut out for the windows etc and then they had the roses climbing up over the trellis. It gave the same effect but without the bugs and rodent issues. Genius! Hard to imagine rodents climbing up spikes roses though – but I guess if there is a will they’ll find a way. Ew.

Everyone is coming home for Easter this year and all I can think about is everyone gathered around the table for a gorgeous brunch and loads of treats and lots of catching up! So I wanted to create an Easter tablescaoe that is comfortable, relaxed, and brimming with herbs & bulbs from the garden and lots of bunnies and blue florals! I even got a beautiful scalloped edge tablecloth in a blue pinstripe that just seems to pull it all together!

What do you think?!

What are your plans this year for Easter?! There’s always a seat at our table! 🐰🤍
