Not everyone lives in a neighborhood where painting a house purple is an option, but my good friend, Robyn (we went to school together here in Marietta!), and her lovely family hit the jackpot. They found a gorgeous neighborhood that is not only walkable and allows for quick commutes, but has tons of character, tree lined streets, and homes that come in every color of the rainbow. She asked me what I thought about painting the house purple and my response was a resounding yes!
Most of us have to live in fear of our HOA so we don’t even get to contemplate painting our houses purple, but what if you could? Would you? What shade would you choose?
Personally, I love a deeper shade of amethyst, aubergine, or a pale lilac. I think these colors are lasting and will really give Robyn and her family major wow factor when they go to sell. Personally, I would LOVE to be the family that tells everyone, “We are the purple house on the right.” Wouldn’t that be so eccentric and fantastic?
Here’s a photo of Robyn’s house when they bought it. STUNNING, right?
Here is Robyn’s initial color choice. Her sister told her that it made her throw up in her mouth. Gulp. Probably not the impression one wants to make when paying thousands of dollars to paint the house!
I attempted to show what a darker blackberry color could look like with the same Sherwin Williams online color tool, but even though I think the color is beautiful, their app kind of makes everything look weird.
I tried using their paint brush tool and after more attempts than I care to admit, this was the result:
Better, but quite frankly, uninspiring, if you ask me. Then I happened upon Old Amethyst by Behr… Now we might be on to something!
GORGEOUS! And with the white and the greenery? Over the top.
Here are a couple more favorites:
If I had a purple house, I would have to bring the color inside as well. Lilacs, wisteria, tulips… the floral choices alone are enticing!
Or perhaps A shade of purple figs…
With walls to match inside would be a near necessity!
But not everyone is a purple house kind of person. Perhaps a purple door…
We want to know what you think! Tell us! Yes to purple or no way, Jose?

I actually love the Old Amethyst shade you chose more than the one we had picked out! And the photo of the gorgeous house with the white trim and pergola showcases it very well! We’ve actually discussed putting a small pergola arbor in the front.
You also touched on something that I didn’t mention in our conversations yesterday. One of the things Brandon and I loved about the idea of painting the house purple is being able to say “we live in the purple house” and people know exactly which house is ours! In a neighborhood with hundreds of houses in a multitude of interesting shades, there are surprisingly very few purple ones!
It is just finding the right balance between uniqueness and the kind of eccentricity that people might find too garish… that is what I am struggling with. We are normally pretty low-key and conservative when it comes to design choices. Painting the house will be very expensive and we don’t want to regret the color choice!

I think if you stick with a grayish purple that you will absolutely love the color and have just the right amount of eccentricity!
