As we get settled back into the US, we would really like to purchase a home and settle a bit for the sake of the kids. I assumed that we would max out our budget on the biggest and best house we could afford, but now that we near our decision, I have started to wonder if we should consider a second home. I suppose we will need the first before the second, but it might persuade us to buy a smaller home for our every day life so we can run away to “the cottage” on school holidays and long weekends. We have always said that we would prefer to visit somewhere different every time we travel, but now I am beginning to wonder if it wouldn’t be special to have a home that we could pay off and give to our children one day…
I wondered if any of you own a vacation home? How did you decide where to buy? If you don’t own a vacation home, would you consider it? Where would you want it to be?
I have been imagining something rustic and “undone.” Perhaps it could be a bit dreamy, with charm rivaling “The Holiday” where our family could create extra special memories. Now I know I sounds like I’m over idealizing the whole thing, but many of our Danish friends have “summer homes” where they spend their summers and holidays and I find it to be so picturesque! What do you think?
This historical home in the Hudson Valley is, in my opinion, pretty close to perfection. We would have a hard time leaving!

This is such a great post! We just bought a second home this year but we are at a different (empty nest) stage than you so we probably chose our location based on that. We just bought a very small (850 sf) historic cottage in Nashville. Our son lives in Nashville and we were going there so often to visit it just made sense. It had been renovated but I am in the process of giving it my version of my cottage/farmhouse/eclectic touches. Would love to show you pics before if start the kitchen. Joy

Nashville is SUCH a great place to buy right now! I keep thinking of your home here and those concrete floors. I want them in my next house!

My parents used to have a second home and a beach apartment. Growing up with those was nice but now that I inherited them it’s a huge dilemma!I’d rather travel to go always to the same places, costs and expenses of second houses are never small and thinking of selling them made me feel guilty about my parents.
Those are my thoughts Valentina.
