Legendary. A word that most of us associate with rock stars and actors, but if you really think about it you probably know a few people who may not be so popular to the entire world, but they are most certainly amongst their family and friends. What makes a person legendary? What moves them from mere mortals to people who seem to defy humanity? It’s something about them, isn’t it? Something about the way they laugh, the way they light up a room, the way they command attention, and seem so utterly unforgettable. Can we become legendary ourselves? Can we move from ordinary to extraordinary? You probably already figured out that I am going to say absolutely yes!
I think about my mom and her parties and her ability to lay out a buffet- legendary.
My grandfather’s roasted potatoes that we would all beg him to make- you know those kinds of recipes. The ones that make your eyes roll to the back of your head with ecstasy. Legendary.
My other grandfather? We were all glued to hearing of his stories- especially the time he was serving in the military and was flying in the dark night and Fell out of the airplane (thankfully with his parachute on though it didn’t employ immediately and we were on the edge of our seats as he told us how he was free falling in the pitch blackness of night … even though we were all evidence of the outcome!). He was rescued by the Pygmy people who didn’t kill him because they thought he was a god because of his towering stature (something I obviously did not inherit!) Legendary.
There is our family friend, Nora, who let us pretend to drive her sports car as it sat in the driveway and always had a parakeet on her shoulder who would eat seeds she would feed them from her own lips! But it was her suits and her laughter that I loved the most. Legendary.
Guys. We are here to be legends! Because every one of these people who live as legends in my mind had one thing in common- they lived every day with gusto and even, at times, a bit of panache. They’ve got grit and passion and a little bit of that “doing things my way” about them and we can’t help but love them for it, can we?
So, as we go into the weekend, I’m thinking about how my home helps me live my most extraordinary life- from over the top tablescapes, to foraging for huge branches (and bringing them back in the darkness of the night. I’m sure my neighbors won’t miss them!) We’ve got baskets overflowing with firewood and blankets, s’mores supplies always ready, bourbon infused cakes laid out on marble trays, Hocus Pocus playing in the house and a fire going in the fireplace. It’s all the little things coming together to make big ever day moments that help us create larger than life moments in our own homes. Rather than paring back, slowing down, or taking it easy, let’s go after life full throttle… and with a bit of a flourish whenever possible!
Who knows? Maybe one day our family and friends will call us legendary! But in the meantime, there’s a weekend ahead and I hope you’ll join me in living up every minute of it! xxV
