A modern bohemian. She’s unapologetically unconventional… She’s known to dance to the beat of her own drum. Some call her wild, untamable, free spirited, rule breaker… That only makes her smile. She doesn’t live confined to social norms. She’s a dreamer… and sees a world of possibilities. Life is an adventure…
How do we translate the soul of a modern bohemian into our homes? How do we bring a sense of adventure and free spiritedness into our choices? We must first free ourselves- release ourselves to break “the rules” that have governed us thus far and begin to open our minds to the idea of being a little wild. Does it mean we have to throw every rule out of the window and start hanging our art on the ceiling? Well, no! Not necessarily. We can keep the rules that suit us but to me the very essence of becoming a modern bohemian is in the act of tapping into our inner artist- to seeing the arranging of our pillows and our greenery and our books and all the little things… these are not functional things but rather acts of art.
I always thought Bohemians were people who broke all the rules, who dressed a bit grungy and decorated with stuff pulled out of the trash bins. Sorry. I know. That’s being a bit honest. But what about a modern Bohemian? A patron of the arts. An artist herself. Can she exist in a conventional world? I most definitely think so.
When I think about a modern bohemian I think of someone the world desperately needs- an inventor, a creator, a dreamer. We were taught when we were younger that these are the people who will break the world, but actually, they are the ones who so often fix it! They look for new ideas and new ways. It’s at times terrifying (especially for those of us conditioned to obey the rules… I can hear “Breaking the Law” by Judas Priest playing in my head… yikes!) We aren’t talking about breaking laws. This girl does not look good in orange! Black is still the new black! BUT we can and should open our hearts and our minds to be creatives in our homes. To paint, to decorate, to bake, to grow gardens, to celebrate the art of creating a home and the art of creating a beautiful life.
The proverbial paint brush is in our hands… what are we going to do with it?
I wait on bated breath to hear your thoughts! What would you do today if you didn’t feel so confined and felt free to be a modern bohemian?
