“Why can’t you ever just follow the rules?!” My sister was shouting her question at me while we were standing in the bathroom getting ready for school. I was probably ten and she was twelve. I can’t even remember what rule I had broken, but I guess I was always this way. I never felt the need to be confined by convention. I was always recreating and exploring new possibilities.
You’d think I was destined to be a criminal, but since I don’t look good in orange and I actually appreciate the laws of society, I was never a truly free agent- I just saw the world differently than people around me.
I’ve spent most of my life feeling like I was a menace even to myself- “why can’t I just like things just like everyone else??!!”
It’s taken me over four decades to find an answer to that and it’s very simple- I just like to do things my own way- the way I like, the way I want. Freedom of expression is a wildly high value of mine and, so, I just stopped decorating and dressing the way I was “suppose to” and just started doing what I wanted.
The one thing I know I always love is a juxtaposition of things that seem to not belong together…
The truth is, most of us are a mix of things, and it’s time our wardrobes reflect that. This fall, I’m all about outfits that combine the different sides of who I am. Think leather pants paired with a baseball cap. A blazer worn with just a bra underneath. Mixing prints, textures, and aesthetics like never before. It might sound unconventional, but guess what? So am I, and I bet you are too!
This season, I’m leaning into fashion that lets me be both fierce and comfortable, while also elegant and edgy. So, if you’re ready to break the mold, here are a few outfit ideas that blend modern sophistication with a healthy dose of rock ‘n’ roll. Let’s have some fun with it!
