I’ve been thinking a lot tonight about those relay races we used to play on field day when we were kids. The weather has been quite intense as the seasons “change hands” … It feels like that moment when both hands are still on the baton between the players… do you remember the tension? The intense energy? They even cancelled school in our area due to severe storms which worked out well for us because we spent the latter part of the evening pulling all of the old “memory boxes” away from one side of the basement. Our side yard pipe apparently got nicked and we had two feet of standing water against that side of the house! Yikes!
The best part, though, was that Jack was able to get in touch with a contractor who helped him over the phone (having never heard from us before!) so he was able to run to the store just in time to get a pump. In the meantime, though, the kids and I had moved all the boxes and had proceeded to look through their boxes full of everything from baby clothes to school notebooks written in multiple languages and other drawings and cards and things. We’ve ended up having the best night ever!
It really made me realize all over again the good things that come even from the tense moments of our lives… and also the wild and crazy life we’ve had!
Throughout the week I had already been thinking so much about the Nordic. Our 6 years in Copenhagen were so formative to our style and our belief about life- things like Nature Walks and foraging and decorating with our little treasures came from those years! I also loved how our friends there always mixed modern design with simple crafts…
One of my fondest memories was sitting in the kids’ tiny kindergarten chairs with the other parents and making paper crafts together. We strung up beautiful paper chains and placed paper stars we had just completed in the windows… it didn’t hurt that these occasions also came with yummy treats, such as Danish pancake balls and a variety of cookies! (I’ll be sharing more of those recipes with you soon!)
I’ve always been enamored with the simple joys of life, and as we begin this next season, I am committed more than ever to cherish and celebrate the simple things that are so good in life… like jumbo blueberries, and a roast chicken meal eaten all together as a family… and little branches from the blueberry and blackberry bushes in a vase… and pinecones foraged from our otherwise utterly hideous pine tree… and a sink full of hydrangeas… and a bed newly fixed… and you, always you. I’m so grateful that this crazy little thing called the Internet brought so many of us together- kindred spirits on this crazy journey called life.
Thank you so much for all the words of kindness you give to me. I hope in my small little way I can give back to you as well.
Happy Weekend, we Dear friends! I hope it is one full of simple pleasures! xxV
