“Why can’t you just be normal?!” A very close family member asked me that question. I was 10 and for some reason that question stuck with me over 35 years later. It was actually a very good question, though the intention wasn’t really meant to be so. I’ve thought a lot about it over the years… marries at 19, has a baby at 21, moves abroad with same baby, changes countries, changes languages, again and again. Sells it all. Rebuilds it all. I guess you could so I didn’t take a conventional route.
I wish I could tell you that I was totally cool, laid back throughout the whole thing and always had a quiet confidence, but the truth is that I was utterly scared to death! I second guessed myself, worried about everything and generally gave myself as many gray hairs as possible by the time I was in my 30’s. Call it youth or just insecurity, but being “cool” as in the person who is relaxed and breaks the rules without fretting… not me! Hahaha!
But I’ve always aspired to be cool… you know, chilled and seems to always have a way of believing everything will work out without my endless need to fuss over every detail of life. That’s a great goal- and one we may want to consider as we plunge into creating our homes.
“Society” has a way of making us think that there’s one way of doing things, but I guess after having lived in so many places and met so many different people, I’ve become a firm believer in doing whatever makes you happy! A lot of people have left quite a few comments over the years (the disadvantage of the internet, though getting to chat with you made it all worth it!) saying things like, “Why don’t you use more color?!”& “Don’t you know real designers use color in their homes?” & “You must be depressed or going through a horrible life behind the scenes.” Yeah. I wish I was making that up. As a perpetual fretter… those comments shook me to the core. They hurt… like the little deep places of your soul.
Here’s my takeaway- Who the heck made them think their way was “right?” There is no “right” way of creating a home. You can hang your curtains from the middle of the room and upside down if you want to! Isn’t that the best part of having your own home? It’s all about you, for you, and by you- so make it whatever you want! If you want to change it every week, experiment with different ideas, or stick with one thing and never change it- well that’s for you to decide! Obviously if you are doing something illegal or harmful to another person that’s a different story, but I think we all realize that we aren’t talking about THAT kind of stuff!
I hope we always keep you inspired to create a beautiful home around you and that if you like something you see us doing, that we equip you to create something similar in your own home, but know that we believe in YOU. We believe in your freedom to express yourself, to create, and being the coolest version of YOU!
So, as you plunge into another weekend, I hope you’ll find a little time to ask yourself this simple question… “if you had full freedom, what kind of home would you create?”
And then if it doesn’t match your current situation perhaps a good follow up question would be, “How do I move myself close to my dream home?”
I know. We got deep. I can’t help it. We just finished one of the biggest projects we’ve ever done. And I was given full freedom. The client never saw the mood boards. Ever. It was exhilarating and terrifying… I guess you’ll have to wait a few more weeks to find out how it turned out…
But in the meantime it’s your turn! What are we creating for you?!
I love you all so much and I’m so grateful for this little corner of the internet where we get to meet. I’ll send you off into the weekend with a big hug and a kiss for each cheek! xxV
